Hide and Seek (2005)

You know the subplot about the neighbors who lost their daughter? It means nothing. Fuggeddaboudit.

“Charlie” is really David (Robert DeNiro), who caught his wife (an unrecognizable Amy Irving) kissing another man at the New Year’s Eve party, later smothered her to death in bed, and set it up to look like she committed suicide in the bathtub. “Charlie” also killed Elizabeth (Elizabeth Shue), ambushed the sheriff (although we never know if he dies or not), and has been creating those gruesome scenes in the bathroom every morning at 2:06.

David doesn’t remember any of this until near the end of the picture, when he discovers his home office is nothing but packed boxes (and the book he’s been writing in all this time is blank). Emily (Dakota Fanning), on the other hand, has known all along that “Charlie” is really Dear Old Dad — and in light of that, her behavior isn’t so weird after all, is it?

The big climax comes after “Charlie” cuckolds the sheriff, and Emily calls Katherine (Famke Janssen), who drives up from the city, tracks “Charlie” (who is now hell-bent on killing Emily) and the kid to the cave in the woods. To make a long story short, Katherine blows “Charlie” away with the sheriff’s service revolver.

Alternate ending #1: Emily is now living with Katherine, and everything seems just ducky. Before heading off to school, Emily finishes a picture she’s been drawing. As she and Katherine leave the house, we get a close-up of the drawing, which shows Katherine and Emily… and Emily’s got two heads.

Alternate ending #2: Katherine finishes reading a bedtime story to Emily. When Katherine gets up to turn off the light before leaving Emily’s room, Emily asks her if she’ll leave the door ajar. Katherine tells her she knows she can’t do that… because, as we see when Katherine closes the door, Emily’s room is in a mental hospital.
